Preparing for the REFRESH!

Are you wondering what's happening at Aspen Hill?

Aspen Hill staff and Office Movers have been busily preparing the branch for our refresh. Here are a few pictures so that you can see the beginning of our transformation!

Both information desks were taken apart and removed. The children's and adult information desks will be relocated during the refresh project.

Children's Information Desk Being Taken Apart

Some books and library materials have been boxed and labeled and put into various places in the library in preparation for painting and carpeting.

Packed books in the children's room

When Aspen re-opens, all the computers will be grouped together. It will be easier to find your assigned computer. Previously customers would have to go to three different areas of the library to use public computers.

Preparation for computers

Shelving in the former media room was removed so that new flooring can be installed.

Preparing for the new tile floors

Check back soon to check Aspen Hill's progress.

Thanks

What will happen to the Aspen Hill staff when the library is closed for the refresh?

Aspen Hill staff will be assigned temporarily to other libraries in the area.

What will happen to the books on the shelves?

Express Books (with the red labels on the spine) will be sent to nearby branches that are impacted by our closure. Some books will be boxed or left on the shelves and covered with a special wrap so that they are not damaged during the painting and renovation of the library.

We look forwarding to seeing you when re-open in the spring. Be sure to stop in and see the REFRESH plans before we close!

Thanks

What Is a "Refresh" and When Will It Take Place?

Aspen Hill library will close to the public on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 8 PM so that it can be "refreshed."

So "what exactly is a refresh?"

A “refresh” project is a new Capital Improvement Program process approved by County Council and the County Executive to allow library buildings to get significant and timely updates without having to close for the lengthy time it takes for a full renovation.

So what types of updates will I see at Aspen Hill Library?

  • Painting and re-carpeting of the public areas
  • Remodeling the public restrooms including floors, walls, and toilet stall partitions
  • Replacing the carpet in the meeting room with vinyl tile
  • Adding more individual study rooms (5 to be exact)
  • A dedicated book drop that can be used 24 hours a day!
  • Improved Wi-Fi
  • New furniture
  • Some new shelving
Here are some of the architects renderings of new Aspen Hill!

What nearby branches can I use while Aspen Hill is closed?

How long will Aspen Hill be closed?

Aspen Hill will be closed for approximately 6 months.

Where will the Aspen Hill staff work while the library is closed?

Staff will work at other branches temporarily until Aspen Hill re-opens.

What will be the last day that I will be able to choose Aspen Hill branch as a pick-up location for my holds?

Tuesday, Oct 18, 2016

Will I be able to return books in the book drop after Aspen Hill closes?

Yes, but only until Tuesday, November 22, 2016. The book drop will be closed after that and you will be able to return items to any other MCPL library branch.

Stay tuned to the Aspen Hill Library blog for further details......
